Salsa: The Heart of Colombian Dance
Salsa is more than just a dance—it's the heartbeat of Colombian culture, the soundtrack to celebrations, and the rhythm that brings people together across Medellín. At Bailonga, we specialize in teaching salsa with the authenticity and passion it deserves. Whether you're drawn to the energetic on1 timing, the smooth casino style, or the vibrant Colombian salsa that fills our local clubs, we'll help you find your groove and make it your own.
Our salsa classes welcome complete beginners who've never stepped onto a dance floor and experienced dancers looking to refine their technique or learn new patterns. We start with the fundamentals: understanding the clave rhythm, feeling the music in your body, and mastering the basic step. From there, we build progressively—introducing turns, styling, footwork variations, and partner connection that transforms mechanical steps into fluid, musical expression. Many of our students are surprised by how quickly they progress; as one reviewer shared, "We took 3 salsa classes and saw soooo much progress!!"
What sets our salsa instruction apart is our focus on both technique and feeling. Salsa should feel natural, joyful, and expressive—not stiff or overly choreographed. We teach you to listen to the music, interpret it through your body, and connect authentically with your partner or the dance floor. Whether you dream of dancing confidently at social events, experiencing Medellín's famous salsa scene, or simply moving your body to incredible music, our private lessons adapt to your goals and learning pace.
The beauty of salsa is that it's infinitely expandable. After establishing your foundation, we can explore shines (solo footwork), advanced turn patterns, styling elements, musicality, and improvisation. With our 30 years of experience, we've developed teaching methods that make even complex concepts accessible and fun. Come discover why salsa is Colombia's gift to the world—and why it might just become your new passion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to come with a partner for a dance class?
▾
No! You absolutely do not need a partner. If you schedule a private class alone, you will dance with your instructor. Our experienced teachers are skilled at both leading and following, ensuring you get the full learning experience regardless of whether you come solo or with a partner.
I'm a complete beginner — will I be able to keep up?
▾
Absolutely! We welcome complete beginners and love introducing new students to dance. Our instructors break everything down step by step, starting with the fundamentals and building at your own pace. Most students are surprised by how quickly they progress — many see noticeable improvement within just a few classes.
What should I wear to class?
▾
Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely is ideal — athletic wear, yoga pants, or casual clothes all work well. For footwear, avoid flip-flops or open sandals. Dance shoes are great if you have them, but clean sneakers or flat-soled shoes work perfectly for beginners.
How long does it take to learn to dance?
▾
It depends on your goals and how often you practice. Most students feel comfortable with the basics of a dance style within 5–10 classes. Regular classes accelerate progress significantly — students who take 2–3 classes per week see dramatic improvement within a month.
Can I switch between different dance styles in a package?
▾
Yes! Our packages allow you to mix and match dance styles. You might take salsa one day and bachata the next — it's entirely up to you. This flexibility lets you explore different rhythms and find what you love most.
How do I schedule my classes?
▾
Just contact us via WhatsApp at +57 300 773 6266 or send us an email. We'll find a time that works for your schedule. We're open Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 9 PM and offer flexible scheduling throughout the day.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
▾
We understand that plans change. Please give us at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule, and we'll be happy to find you another time. Classes from packages remain valid for 3 months, so you have plenty of flexibility.
I don't speak Spanish — will that be a problem?
▾
Not at all! We work with students from all over the world and have experience teaching in English. Dance is a universal language, and many of our instructors are comfortable communicating in English. You'll feel right at home from your very first class.
Do you offer group classes or only private lessons?
▾
We offer both! Private classes (one-on-one or couples) give you personalised instruction at your own pace, while group classes let you learn in a fun social environment and meet other dancers. Many students enjoy a combination of both.
How long is each class?
▾
Each class is 1 hour long. This is the ideal duration — long enough to make meaningful progress on technique and choreography, but short enough to stay focused and energised throughout.
What makes Bailonga different from other dance studios?
▾
Bailonga has 30 years of experience teaching dance in Medellín, and our focus has always been on creating a warm, welcoming environment where every student feels celebrated. We teach authentic Latin rhythms with passion, and our reviews consistently reflect the joy our students experience. We're not just a dance school — we're a community.
How experienced are your instructors?
▾
Our instructors are professional dancers with years of both performance and teaching experience. They're trained in salsa, bachata, merengue, tango, and porro, and are skilled at adapting their teaching style to suit students at every level — from total beginners to experienced dancers refining their technique.
I'm a tourist visiting Medellín — where should I stay?
▾
We're located in Laureles, one of Medellín's most vibrant and safe neighbourhoods. Staying in Laureles or nearby El Poblado gives you easy access to our studio. Many boutique hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs in the area are within walking distance or a short taxi ride.
